Two sons of Top Fuel racer Doug Herbert were killed in an automobile wreck in Lake Norman.
Jon, 17, and James, 12, died when their Mazda3 collided with another vehicle, according to a spokeswoman for Doug Herbert Racing. Witnesses said the second vehicle was a Hummer and that the two vehicles were involved in a head-on collision.
The wreck occurred on Jetton Road at Meta Road, near the county’s Jetton Park. The family’s home is also on Jetton Road, which was closed for about two hours while police investigated.
Herbert was in Phoenix for preseason testing when the wreck happened around 10 a.m. He was headed home to be with his family, the release said.
Condolences can be sent to Raymer Funeral Home, 16901 Old Statesville Road, Huntersville, N.C. 28078.
In lieu of flowers, Doug Herbert asks that people make a donation to the Speedway Children’s Charities in Jon and James Herbert’s name. Bruce Henderson and David Poole contributed.
God Bless the entire Herbert family. I can only imagine the pain they must feel. Gotta go "Tire Pups" need a hug, well maybe it's me that does.

I read this article early this morning and was very, very saddened by it. I cannot imagine losing a child, let alone two.
