The inevitable question has been asked, what to do with the number 3? Here we go, I will probably lose some friends with this one but such is life. I personally think RCR should be the one who decides. I love Theresa Earnhardt and respect her. With that being said, does it really matter what she thinks? Richard Childress is the one who started that team back in the late 60's. I know that there is so much historE with that number and Ironhead. Anyone who dared to step into his car number would be doomed. NO MATTER WHO THAT WOULD BE!!!
Now that brings up another matter.., Junior. I really don't think he should drive it period. When the time comes in his career where he might want to drive it for RCR, it will ruin ALL the steps Junior took to be HIS OWN MAN. Instead he will be EXPECTED or at best COMPARED to Dale Sr. It might be good idea personally for Junior, but career wise it could prove to be a unwise choice. So Junior please keep and drive Gran-daddy's 8 car.
Now back to the whole number thing. I think respectfully Richard should shelf the number for a little while. Until another generation of Earnhardt or maybe even Childress is ready to make it His/Her own. As a very avid and LOYAL Earnhardt family fan I think that would be the best and MOST respectful thing to do. So if you ask me, and even if you didn't that is what I would do.

My husband & I were talking about this tonight. My personal feelings are that RCR should keep the number untill one of Dale Sr. grandkids drive.
Childress owns the number, so there isn't much Teresa can do about it. And I don't think it would hurt Junior's career. First we have to see where his career takes him. Then, 10-15 years down the road talk about driving the 3 again. He may not want to drive it by then.
I really don't have an opinion on this since I've only been watching NASCAR for 2 years now. I don't feel it's my place to comment since I wasn't watching NASCAR when Sr. was alive.
Jr. looked good at the end of today's duel!! Matt was trying to work with him for awhile, but Jr's car wasn't hooked up yet.
I'm in denial that there was even a 2nd duel. :)
I've always heard that the only way the number 3 would be on the track again was that an Earnhardt would be driving. I don't want to see the number 3 on the track...I just think it would be spooky...I mean you always watched the 3 when Dale Sr. was driving...No matter who your favorite driver was... I don't want to watch the 5 year thing I know is gonna be shown this weekend...
let the MAN and his number rest in peace before it becomes a macabre thing. we have his memory and his history and his tapes. nobody reserected alan kulwicki or davey allison so let it alone and watch the foolish young guns try and fill his shoes-can't be done.
Well...I thiink the number should be memorialized. I agree that Jr is working hard to establish his own identity. RCR owns the number and that's that....I expect JR to be leaving Teresa the first second he can. I also feel tho that the decision on or if that number is ever used by a driver again, should be left strictly to the Earnhardt KIDS. I also think RCR is respectful and would allow that decision to be made by them. They are his legacy.
No matter what happens someone is going to be whining about tho.
My guess is that Teresa wants it shelved and I don't blame her.I truely think that RC doesn't want to use it in the near future.Personally, all the crap stirring the media has inspired over this makes me nauseous since it all started because Dale Jr talked about driving the 3 in 20 years or so.Good grief Charlie Brown-half the folks fussing and arguing about this right now prob won't still be alive in 20 years.
There are some who'll be 79 yrs old in 20 years and I kinda doubt they'll much care if Dale Jr or his son drives it.For that matter the 69 year olds may not either-lol.Do you remember-Dale Jr said "at the end of his career" -do you expect the "end of his career" to be sooner than 20 years?Sooner than 10 years? He'd be 51 in 20 years and he'd be 41 in 10 years.JMO-Just some thoughts from a true blue Earnhardt fan of 27 years.
